Diabetic Emergencies: First Aid for Low & High Blood Sugar in WA

Diabetes is extremely common in Western Australia, and diabetic emergencies can develop rapidly — at home, work, school or in public places.

Here’s how to spot the signs and provide immediate First Aid.

1. Hypoglycaemia (Low Blood Sugar)

This is the most common diabetic emergency.

Causes:

  • Too much insulin

  • Skipped meals

  • Excessive exercise

  • Alcohol

Symptoms:

  • Shaking

  • Sweating

  • Hunger

  • Irritability

  • Confusion

  • Slurred speech

First Aid:

  1. Give fast-acting sugar:

    • Jellybeans

    • Juice

    • Soft drink (not diet)

    • Glucose gel

  2. Wait 10 minutes

  3. Re-check

  4. If no improvement → call 000

Never give food/drink if the person is unconscious.

2. Hyperglycaemia (High Blood Sugar)

Symptoms:

  • Extreme thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea/vomiting

  • Fruity breath smell

First Aid:

  • Call 000

  • Keep person hydrated

  • Monitor breathing
    This condition can be life-threatening (DKA).

3. When to Call 000

  • Person becomes unconscious

  • Unable to swallow

  • No improvement after sugar

  • Severe confusion
