Here’s how to spot the signs and provide immediate First Aid.
1. Hypoglycaemia (Low Blood Sugar)
This is the most common diabetic emergency.
Causes:
Too much insulin
Skipped meals
Excessive exercise
Alcohol
Symptoms:
Shaking
Sweating
Hunger
Irritability
Confusion
Slurred speech
First Aid:
Give fast-acting sugar:
Jellybeans
Juice
Soft drink (not diet)
Glucose gel
Wait 10 minutes
Re-check
If no improvement → call 000
Never give food/drink if the person is unconscious.
2. Hyperglycaemia (High Blood Sugar)
Symptoms:
Extreme thirst
Frequent urination
Fatigue
Nausea/vomiting
Fruity breath smell
First Aid:
Call 000
Keep person hydrated
Monitor breathing
This condition can be life-threatening (DKA).
3. When to Call 000
Person becomes unconscious
Unable to swallow
No improvement after sugar
Severe confusion
