Stroke Recognition: The FAST Signs That Save Lives

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. In WA, strokes are a major medical emergency — and early recognition can save speech, mobility, and life.

Remember the FAST Test

F – Face

Drooping? Uneven smile? One side numb?

A – Arms

Ask them to raise both arms — does one drift down?

S – Speech

Slurred, confused, or unable to speak?

T – Time

Call 000 immediately
Every minute = brain cells lost.

Other Stroke Symptoms

  • Severe headache

  • Loss of balance

  • Vision problems

  • Sudden weakness or numbness

What to Do

  • Call 000

  • Keep person still

  • Lie them on their side

  • Do NOT give food or drink

  • Monitor for deterioration
